At the year-end dinner teens announced this as the theme for the 2010-11 school year. Are you ready to help make the dreams our teens have a reality?

New Students and Volunteers for 2010-11
We are just two weeks away from the official 2010-2011 tutoring/mentoring sessions. We are still registering new students and volunteers. Encourage friends and co-workers to get involved!  Call 312-492-9614 to confirm your intentions or to introduce potential new volunteers or students.

2010 Student and Volunteer Orientations
On September 7th and 8th from 6-7:30pm, volunteers will be on-site for orientations, and on September 9th and 10th, students and their parents/guardians will be on-site for orientations.  Whether this will be your first time in the program or you have earned the “veteran” status in the program, ALL volunteers and ALL students are required to attend one of the two days of orientation.

If there are any reasons why you can’t attend you must notify Administrative Coordinator, EL Da’ Sheon Nix, prior to the scheduled dates.  Hopefully one of the many goals of all students and volunteers is to have a GREAT year, and it starts with the orientations.

1st Quarter Snack and Beverage Sign Up
The 1st Quarter Snack and Beverage sign up sheets have been posted on the front boards and we are hoping to get off to a great start by getting the sheets filled in as quickly as possible.  Veteran Volunteer, Sarah Randag, has already gotten the ball rolling by signing up for snacks on the very first day of the tutoring/mentoring sessions.  If you are interesting in signing up even before the sessions start, just contact a staff member and we can make sure your request is granted.

Video & Filmmakers Club shines this summer!
During an 8-week summer session, Video Club, consisting of three volunteer leaders and seven students in grades 7-11, produced two music videos entirely on their own. The group was rewarded with a trip to WGN Studios last week and the winners of "The Frame Game," Reggie Murphy and Melissa Young, were rewarded with tickets to a Chicago Bears preseason game! For a complete recap of their summer, check out their blog below.

From the Leadership:

Ready, Set, Go!  Are you prepared to start the 2010-11 Cabrini Connections tutor/mentor season?

Great sports teams are working year-round to prepare for their official seasons. Great athletes are doing the same.  For Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection to be a world-class organization, every member of the team, including students, volunteers, leaders, donors, and staff need to be spending quality time doing their own homework and learning, so when they play the game they are as prepared as they can be.

Here are resources that will help you throughout the coming year.  These can be used regardless of where you live, or what role you take with our organization, now, or in the future.

We've created wikis which anyone can view to see our thinking, our strategies, and the plan for the 2010-11 Cabrini Connections. Dates for orientations, first sessions, holiday events, and fund raising benefits are included.    http://tinyurl.com/CC-Timeline-Wiki

Strategies and concepts behind Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection.  Read the essays in the Tutor/Mentor Institute site and share these with people in your  own network. http://www.tutormentorexchange.net

-----------------------------------------------

Read the history of Cabrini Connections at http://www.cabriniconnections.net/mission/history and you'll see that many people contributed many hours of time and talent to create the organization that exists today.

------------------------

As more people spend time learning from the material we point to on our web sites, and from their personal experiences as a tutor, mentor, student and/or leader, they will become more committed to tutoring/mentoring as a strategy for expanding the number of adults who are helping youth living in poverty. They will also know more ways to use their own time, talent and dollars to have an impact on Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection, or on other programs in Chicago, or in other cities.

Throughout the year we will have events that offer a reason for someone to make a donation. The next event is Martini Madness, which will be held on October 1 at The Store on Halsted.  Please read our blogs, and look at the http://www.cabriniconnections.net/donate page for information about these events.

----------------------

Thank you to everyone who has made a commitment to be part of the 2010-11 school year of Cabrini Connections.  We hope your journey is as rewarding as those of us who have been involved for 10 or more years.
